I didn't think I'd be able to get my Hackintosh any better than it was before, but I have - partly thanks to Apple (as strange as that may sound). If you have a Hackintosh and are ready to do a bit of fiddling (which I assume you are if you've decided to make a Hackintosh in the first place) then I'd recommend getting the Leopard 10.5.7 update.
This update makes the battery last longer in your HackBook machines. On my Dell Inspiron 6400 it also returned the Quartz Extreme/Clear Image effects that 10.5.6 seemed to break, so my menu bar is translucent again. The upgrade did break my sound though - but a quick repatch to the HDAEnabler.kext that I did way back at 10.5.2 and it's functionally fine again! Chess now works fine (though I don't get why Apple included a Computer Vs Computer option in Chess, the computer just plays by itself =/ ).
The other thing I did was get myself a copy of iLife 2009 to install. It installed just fine, I updated to the latest patches and now my Dell Inspiron acts like a complete Macbook except for the 4 following things
- Still no Wireless....Yet (Project Camphor are currently working on a solution - http://projectcamphor.mercurysquad.com/)
- Sleep doesn't work - and is predicted to never work because of the GMA 950 display adapter.
- There is a slight bit of mouse tearing in some situations (e.g when renaming files)
- The SD card reader only reads SD cards, not the Micro SD cards, XD Cards and MMC cards and MS cards.
Other than that, the biggest problem being the wireless (which hopefully will be fixed this season), the Dell Inspiron 6400 makes a very good Hackintosh. As before, I cannot give step by step instructions on how to do this, because it differs for everyone, but overall - a big Win!
